Our Town
Located along the Great Alpine Road in the middle of Victoria's High Country – and just a three-hour drive from Melbourne – Myrtleford's central location makes it a great place to pull up stumps and explore our region. Resting in the shade of Mount Buffalo, with the best food in the valley, local wineries and craft brewery, shopping and a wide range of accommodation, it's an enjoyable pocket of the ever popular Bright & Surrounds that's affordable too.
Fertile Soils & Rich Pickings
Originally known as Myrtle Creek, the old town was shaped by pastoralists, gold seekers and timber mills.
The arrival of large numbers of Italian migrants in the 1920s in the aftermath of WWII saw Myrtleford evolve into a major tobacco growing centre. Until the closure of the industry in 2006, tobacco was the major crop grown here and today, many of the distinctive corrugated iron tobacco drying kilns can still be seen around the town. The old tobacco farms have since metamorphosed into vineyards, hops farms, nut groves, berry and kiwifruit farms, apple orchards and olives groves, while beef and dairy cattle remain a big part of our agriculture.
Our love of quality fresh produce is evident and you'll find it readily available around Myrtleford at farm gates and at the monthly Farmers Market in town Piazza.
