Visit Gapsted
Once a rest stop for diggers heading for the goldfields of the Buckland Valley and Morses Creek, Gapsted is today a small farming community nestled in the foothills of the Stanley Range a few minutes’ drive from Myrtleford. Here the fertile soils, warm days and cool nights produce intensely flavoured grapes used to produce our award-winning cool-climate wines. Nut groves and berry farms adorn the hills, and in the paddocks, plump beef cattle and dairy cows graze on green pastures. It would be a missed opportunity to drive through Gapsted without stopping to taste its produce. Here's what to do.
The Best Things to Do in Gapsted
Gapsted Wines on the Great Alpine Road produces a number of award-winning wines, from innovative varieties like Fiano and Saperavi to favourites like Prosecco, Merlot, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. It also has a sensational restaurant – voted best cellar door restaurant in the Alpine Valley Wine Region – serving a seasonal menu expertly matched with wine. Open all year, a visit to this cellar door overlooking the vineyard is always rewarding.
For one of the loveliest farm stays around, head to Valley Nut Groves and choose from the modern Cortes Kiln or the quaint Cortes Cottage stay. The farm, established in 1923, specialises in producing fine quality Franquette, Chandler and Mayette walnuts as well as walnut oil. Valley Nut Groves also has a farm gate store that is open during the nut harvest season between April and June.
Murray to Mountains Rail Trail
The Taylors Gap section of the popular Murray to Mountains Rail Trail is one of the most scenic and exhilarating rides of the entire trail, which extends for over 100km between Wangaratta and Bright. The gap marks the entry to Bright & Surrounds and the grand beauty of the Ovens Valley in the foothills of Mount Buffalo. The rail trail is also a pleasant way to explore the cellar doors and farm gates in Gapsted, Myrtleford, Ovens and Eurobin. Bike hire and bike tours are available at the Myrtleford Cycle Centre.
Annual Events
Shakespeare in the Vines
The annual Shakespeare In The Vines at Gapsted Wines is performed in the mid-summer twilight on a hill overlooking the vineyard. Melbourne-based Essential Theatre returns each year to perform a different play by Shakespeare and with picnic hampers and wine to match, this event is always a sell-out.
